How Forever Ago's Main Story Is Structured
The campaign unfolds across nine main sections. Each one mixes present-day exploration with flashback vignettes and dream sequences that represent Alfred's inner turmoil. Understanding this rhythm helps you know when to slow down and when to push forward.
| Section | Type | Core Activity |
|---|---|---|
| Woolson Falls | Flashback tutorial | Learn camera, walking, dialogue |
| Karl's Pump 'N' Mart | Present day + nightmare | Shopping list, memory trigger |
| Highway Star Diner | Present day + flashback | Flowers, jukebox, booth tasks |
| On the Road Back Home | Present day + dream | Van breakdown, phone booth |
| The Sam Detour | Present day | Van repair, watering plants |
| Captain Marley's Retreat | Present day + flashback | Bolt cutter, arcade, boat |
| Winslow Lighthouse | Present day + flashback | Dog shelter, photography session |
| Williamina Peak | Present day + flashback | Blizzard, dog tracks, soup |
| Epilogue | Present day | Final interactions at home |
You can snap up to 12 photographs per level and later choose four to place in Audrey's journal album. Community reports suggest these choices are mostly cosmetic, but they shape how your personal scrapbook of the journey looks by the end.
Woolson Falls: Learning the Camera
Woolson Falls opens as a flashback to Alfred and Audrey's early days. You play as Audrey here, and the sequence doubles as a tutorial.
Photo Checklist
Inside the bedroom, start by photographing the manual itself to learn the controls. Then:
- Turn around and capture the teddy bear on the bed
- Move right and photograph the images on the wall beside the study table
- Snap the calendar in the same area
- Point your camera out the window at Alfred, who poses for you
During the car ride, take any photo and keep talking to Alfred. When he points out the Woolson Falls sign, photograph it. After the ride ends, crouch to get close to the flowers and capture them, then look left and photograph Alfred posing again.
The Handoff
You'll photograph a second signboard, then Alfred takes the camera and you switch to third-person control. Follow Audrey along the trail and keep the conversation going. At the end, Alfred takes one last photo with Audrey. Shake the photo to develop it, then open your journal and place it inside to close the chapter.
Karl's Pump 'N' Mart: Shopping List Walkthrough
This is your first proper present-day section. Alfred stops for road trip supplies, and the store owner Milton plays a memorable role.
Item Locations
Grab a red basket on your left when you enter, then track down three items:
| Item | Location |
|---|---|
| Windshield wipers | Far right end of the store |
| Cookies | Straight ahead, opposite side of the store |
| Road atlas | Near the toilet paper section, by an old photo |
Take everything to the counter near the entrance and pay Milton. A cutscene pulls you into a memory, then drops you into a nightmare sequence. Keep heading straight, go through the door, and climb the stairs. Once you're out, pay Milton with your wallet.
You'll camp for the night afterward. This is a good moment to place your photos in the album and take any extra shots you want. Drive on the next morning to reach the diner.
Highway Star Diner: Flowers, Jukebox, and the Booth
Three tasks define this stop, and they can be tackled in a flexible order.
Finding Audrey's Favorite Flowers
Leave your room and head straight until you see the restaurant. Take a right toward your van, pass through the fence beside it, and look near the telescope at the end. The flowers are there — pick some.
Playing the Jukebox Song
Inside the diner, head left to the jukebox. Cycle through the track list and select "Green Green Grass of Home" by Patti Page.
Unlocking the Window Booth
The booth by the window requires membership. Speak to Maddy at the counter, and she'll trade you a favor: investigate the trash problem outside. Head right after exiting the diner, go through the fence, and check the hole and trash area. You'll find a stray dog — photograph it, then report back to Maddy.
Once you're seated, place more photos in your album if you have them, then photograph the scenery outside the window when prompted. The memory sequence that follows has you interact with the gate sign, meet Audrey, and peek inside the diner. Follow her, sit down, and confess your feelings when the dialogue option appears.
On the Road Back Home and The Sam Detour
After the diner flashback, you're back in the present with a broken-down van.
Diagnosing the Van
- Check the leakage behind the van
- Inspect the hood at the front
- Look inside the van from the right side
Grab your journal from near the dog inside, then walk straight ahead to a phone booth. A cutscene leads into another dream — keep moving forward and interact with the phone at the end.
Meeting Sam
When you wake, read the note on the door and pick a shirt to wear. This choice is one of several small personality touches the game offers. Head outside and interact with the objects in the house, then exit to find Sam.
You can't fix the van alone. Follow Sam and help water the plants along the way — refill at the faucet when your water runs out. After watering, follow her again to collect the gaskets. A cutscene handles most of the repair; you just tighten the final bolts.
The section ends with a walk across the fields with Sam and the dog. Throw the stick to play with the dog, then sit with Sam and take a selfie for your journal.
Captain Marley & The Buccaneers' Retreat
This abandoned resort is the longest puzzle section in the game, so take it step by step.
Getting Inside and Finding the Bolt Cutter
Look inside the entrance booth, then follow the path to the main reception area. Grab a day ticket from the ticket booth and use it to enter. Stick to the right side and pass under the narrow gap.
Continue straight, then turn left into the captain's galley and head upstairs for a nightmare sequence. After you wake, follow the linear path and use the planks to bridge the floor gap. The bolt cutter waits on the other side.
Bolt Cutter Checklist
| Lock | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Balcony lock | Access the ladder to descend |
| Arcade lock | Enter the Skull and Coins arcade |
| Souvenir shop lock | Reach the mascot tickets |
| Harbor lock | Unlock the boat |
In the arcade, pull the lever to restore the lights, then find the machine at the very back. Play the Guardian Lord minigame — beating the high score isn't required, as the objective completes either way.
Pick up the mascot tickets from the shelf next to the parrot in the souvenir shop. Exit through the door near the parrot and head to the docks. Take the boat toward the island, and photograph mid-ride to trigger the flashback. Steer alongside Audrey — let her steer first, then follow. After the cutscene on the island, carve the tree again in the present.
Winslow Lighthouse and Williamina Peak
These two chapters close out the road trip before the finale.
Winslow Lighthouse
You'll stop at an animal shelter first — a cutscene plays, and the dog joins you properly. After waking, make coffee and feed the dog. Follow Charles and photograph him when he sits down; your camera switches angles automatically, so keep shooting. Continue along the path, play fetch with the dog, and read the sign at the lighthouse entrance.
Point your camera at the top of the lighthouse and take the photo to enter a memory. Climb the stairs inside and watch the cutscenes to finish.
Williamina Peak
While driving through the storm, increase your wiper speed. You'll crash into another dream — keep walking forward to escape it. When you wake, follow the dog tracks in the snow and call out for your dog. Even when the tracks disappear, keep heading straight. After the reunion, climb the stairs to the peak and walk through the dream door.
Back in the memory, place the tray beside Audrey and feed her the soup. Speak with her, then open the drawer and read Audrey's final note in your journal.
Epilogue: Finishing Alfred's Journey
The epilogue is short and reflective. Walk through the house and interact with anything you can. In the kitchen, start making dinner. You'll reunite with your dog, and the game ends when you go play with your pet.
If you missed photos along the way, this is your last chance to appreciate the quieter moments. The game deliberately rewards players who match its relaxed pace rather than rushing objectives.
Tips for a Smooth Playthrough
A few habits make the whole run easier:
- Save often and watch for checkpoints. Community reports note that checkpoints can be infrequent, and progress lost after a crash is frustrating.
- Approach interactables slowly. The interact prompt can be finicky if you run at objects too quickly.
- Photograph everything early. You can only keep four photos per album entry, so having a wide pool gives you better choices.
- Read the optional notes. Letters, bills, and photographs flesh out side characters like Sam and explain why the theme park fell into disrepute.
- Don't stress the Guardian Lord high score. The objective completes regardless of your result.
