Forever Ago Chapter Guide: Full Story Walkthrough

Complete Forever Ago chapter guide covering every story beat from Woolson Falls to the Epilogue, with photo objectives, item locations, and puzzle solutions.

Forever Ago is an emotional narrative adventure that follows Alfred and Audrey through a lifetime of memories, and this forever ago chapter guide breaks down every section so you never miss a photo, item, or story beat. The game's core loop revolves around Alfred's camera: you capture moments, file them in your journal, and watch memories unfold through the lens. Miss a required shot and you'll stall out, which is why a structured chapter-by-chapter reference matters.

Unlike combat-heavy adventures, Forever Ago gates progress behind photography prompts and small fetch tasks. This forever ago chapter guide walks through all ten story sections in order, from the opening bedroom in Woolson Falls to the final evening in the Epilogue. Along the way you'll find tables covering required photos, shopping lists, and puzzle solutions so you can move through the story at your own pace.

How Forever Ago's Chapter Structure Works

Forever Ago splits its main story into distinct named chapters, each tied to a location on Alfred and Audrey's road trip. Most chapters follow the same rhythm: explore a small area, complete a handful of objectives, trigger a memory sequence, and file your photos in the album.

Two mechanics repeat throughout the game:

  • Photo prompts — a shutter icon or dialogue cue tells you when a shot is mandatory. These almost always advance the story.
  • Journal filing — after major scenes, you'll shake printed photos and place them into your album. Skipping this can block progression.

Community reports suggest optional photos don't block progress, but they do fill out the album and add context to later memory scenes. If you're a completionist, shoot everything that looks interesting.

Woolson Falls: Opening Chapter Walkthrough

Woolson Falls serves as the tutorial. You start inside a bedroom and learn the camera controls by photographing the manual itself. From there, turn around and snap the teddy bear on the bed, then move right to capture the wall images and the calendar near the study table.

Alfred calls from outside the window next — photograph him mid-pose to progress. The following car ride has you take one random shot and talk with Alfred until he points out the Woolson Falls sign, which you must photograph.

The Trail Section

After the car stops, crouch near the flowers and shoot them, then look left for another Alfred pose. Further along the trail you'll photograph a second signboard and continue the conversation. Once Audrey says thank you, take one more picture of Alfred.

At this point Audrey takes the camera and you switch to third-person control. Follow her along the trail, keep talking, and let Alfred take the final photo of the two of them together. When the time skip hits, shake the photo to develop it and place it in your journal to close the chapter.

Karl's Pump 'N' Mart: Shopping List and Nightmare

This chapter is a straightforward supply run, but it hides a nightmare sequence that confuses some players. Here's the full shopping list:

ItemLocation in Store
Windshield wipersFar right end of the store
CookiesOpposite side of the store from wipers
Road atlasNear the toilet paper section (old photo hangs here)

Grab a red basket on your left, collect all three items, and pay Milton at the counter near the entrance. A cutscene then pulls you into a memory, and afterward you re-enter the mart as your younger self inside a nightmare. Just walk straight, go through the door, and climb the stairs. When the nightmare ends, take out your wallet and pay Milton to finish up.

You'll camp next. Interact with your collected pictures to place them in the album, and feel free to take extra shots of anything scenic. The next day, drive on to the diner.

Highway Star Diner: Flowers, Jukebox, and the Booth

Three objectives await here. First, find Audrey's favorite flower. Exit your room, head straight until you see the restaurant, take a right toward the van, and slip through the fence near it. The flowers grow beside the telescope at the end of that path.

Second, head into the diner and find the jukebox on the left side. Cycle through the track list and play "Green Green Grass of Home" by Patti Page — Audrey's favorite song.

Third, sit in the booth and learn you need special membership. Talk to Maddy at the counter; she'll give you a task. Exit the diner, go right, and pass through the fence to investigate the hole and trash area. You'll find a dog there — photograph it, then report back to Maddy.

The Diner Memory Sequence

Once you're seated in the booth, file any pending photos and snap the scenery outside the window when prompted. You'll then enter a memory of this location. Interact with the gate sign first, meet up with Audrey, and peek inside the diner to trigger a cutscene. After it ends, open the small case in your hand and follow Audrey. Sit with her at the end, watch the cutscene, and confess your feelings to close the chapter.

On the Road Back Home and The Sam Detour

Back in the present, your van breaks down. Check the leakage behind the van, inspect the hood in front, then look inside from the right side. Enter the van and grab your journal near the dog, then walk straight ahead to a phone booth. A cutscene drops you into another dream — walk forward, interact with the phone, and keep going to exit.

The Sam Detour Objectives

After waking, read the note on the door and pick a shirt. Interact with highlighted objects around the house, then head outside to meet Sam. You'll fail to fix the van alone, so follow Sam and help water the plants along the way. Refill at the faucet whenever your water runs out.

StepAction
1Water all plants while following Sam
2Follow Sam to collect the gaskets
3Watch the repair cutscene, then tighten the final bolts
4Follow Sam and the dog across the fields
5Throw the stick to play with the dog
6Sit with Sam and take a selfie for your journal

Captain Marley & The Buccaneers' Retreat

This abandoned resort chapter is the longest puzzle stretch in the game. Enter through the ticket booth to get a day ticket, then stick to the right side and pass under the narrow area.

Head straight, take a left at the end into the captain's galley, and climb the stairs into a nightmare. Walk straight through it, interacting with objects until you're free. Back in the resort, use planks to bridge the floor gap and grab the bolt cutter on the other side.

Bolt Cutter Lock Order

LockPurpose
Balcony lockAccess the ladder to descend
Arcade lockEnter the skull and coins arcade
Souvenir shop lockGrab mascot tickets from the shelf next to the parrot
Harbor lockUnlock the boat to reach the island

Inside the arcade, pull the lever to restore power, then play Guardian Lord at the back machine. Community reports confirm you don't need to actually beat the high score — attempting it completes the objective either way.

Take the boat toward the island and snap a photo mid-ride to trigger the flashback. Steer alongside Audrey (let her steer first, then follow), follow her on the island, and when you return to the present, carve the tree again.

Winslow Lighthouse and Williamina Peak

Before the lighthouse, you'll stop at an animal shelter for the dog. After the cutscene, you're back on the road. Once you arrive and wake up, make coffee and feed the dog, then follow Charles. Photograph him when he sits down — the camera switches automatically during this sequence, so keep shooting until it ends.

Continue along the linear path toward the lighthouse, playing fetch with your dog along the way. Read the sign at the entrance, watch the cutscene, then point your camera at the lighthouse top to enter a memory. Climb the stairs inside and watch the cutscenes to finish the chapter.

Surviving Williamina Peak

While driving through the storm, increase your wiper speed. You'll crash regardless, dropping into a dream — walk straight to escape. After waking, follow your dog's tracks in the snow and call out for it. Even when the tracks vanish, keep heading straight; you'll reunite with your dog and climb the stairs to the peak.

In the following dream, walk straight through the door. Back in reality, place the tray beside Audrey, feed her the soup, and talk with her. After the flashback, open the drawer, read through your journal, and read Audrey's final note.

Epilogue: Finishing Alfred's Journey

The Epilogue is deliberately quiet. Stay inside the house and interact with every highlighted object you can find. When you reach the kitchen, start making dinner. You'll then meet up with your dog, and the epilogue — along with the main story — ends when you go play with your pet.

There are no missable objectives here, so take your time. If you've been photographing optional moments throughout the game, this is the payoff: your album becomes a complete record of Alfred and Audrey's life together.

Tips for a Smooth Playthrough

A few habits make the whole game easier:

  • Shoot early, shoot often. Optional photos never hurt and often enrich later memory scenes.
  • File photos immediately. Shake and place them in the album whenever the game prompts you.
  • Watch for shutter icons. They signal mandatory shots more reliably than dialogue.
  • Don't stress the arcade high score. Attempting Guardian Lord is enough.
  • Keep water topped up during The Sam Detour to avoid backtracking to the faucet.
